Rossi fastest in qualifying practice
25 February 2007

Valentino Rossi in qualifying at JerezValentino Rossi came out on top of today's qualifying simulation in official practice at Jerez, putting in a superb late lap to overcome Dani Pedrosa.

Factory Yamaha rider Rossi and Repsol Honda's Pedrosa were the class of the field throughout the session, which effectively served as a non-championship curtain-raiser for the new season.

Rossi received a new BMW road car for his 'pole', but his ecstatic celebrations on his slowing down lap were prompted not by this prize, but by the knowledge that he had sent a clear message to his rivals on the eve of the new season.

"It is great," said Rossi. "It is not important for the championship but it's the first battle and it means that our bike is a lot more competitive than last year.

"I had a fantastic lap in qualifying, so thank you to my bike - it was very good to ride. It was a good point to start from."

Pedrosa and Rossi swapped provisional pole three times in the first 20 minutes of the session, before Pedrosa beat last year's Jerez pole time with a 1:38.934 lap that Rossi initially seemed hard-pressed to match.

Adjustments to the Yamaha M1's set-up did the trick, however, and with seven minutes to go Rossi produced a 1:38.786 lap to retake pole.

Pedrosa's response saw the young Spaniard 0.006 seconds ahead of Rossi's time at the third split, but he fell short in the remainder of the lap.

Then on his final lap, Rossi produced a stunning 1:38.394 effort, putting the top spot beyond Pedrosa's reach. Although the Honda rider improved his time on his own final run, he remained 0.133 seconds shy of Rossi.

Colin Edwards took third on the second Yamaha, ousting reigning champion Nicky Hayden in the closing minutes.

Randy de Puniet put his Kawasaki an impressive fifth, ahead of the Ducati Marlboros and Chris Vermeulen.

There was good news for the cash-strapped Team Roberts too, as Kenny Roberts Jr. earned ninth position.

Carlos Checa completed the top ten, but Friday and Saturday testing pacesetter Marco Melandri could only manage 14th.

Qualifying practice results:
1. Rossi Yamaha 1:38.394 17
2. Pedrosa Honda 1:38.527 + 0.133 16
3. Edwards Yamaha 1:39.300 + 0.906 16

good to see Vale up at the top again and winning the BMW but tipically the Northern Irish rider has to come last Laughing

McWilliams is not a good rider and Northern Ireland has far far better riders than him such as Johnny Rea and Eugene Laverty!

I think it's fair to say McWilliams is only at Ilmor because he's got heaps of experience and it good at improving a bike/ he knows how to give some good feedback to the engineers.

As for title contenders:

Valentino Rossi is an obvious one. He's always a contender.

Nicky Hayden for me is just as obvious. He's the reigning champion! Yes, he's had a but of a struggle so far during testing. He still needs to adjust to the bike and he's missed out on some testing due to his injured shoulder, but he was 4th in that qualifying practice. He seems confident to be able to find some improvement and I think he's still getting better each time he goes out there!

Pedrosa has seemed fast during testing, the ike fits him perfectly. He has learned a lot from last year and will surely be more consistent.

I think Capirossi and Melandri will defintely be fighting for the title. Bridgestone seems to have things fixed for races but needs to improve the qualifying tyres.

Elias migt be an outsider too. And let's not forget the Suzuki's!

Well, I think that we'll see the best Rossi in years, but honestly, I see Dani in conditions to beat him. Hayden problems to addapt to the new bike would make him to lose many championship options. I mean I'm sure he'll be on top, but how many races will it cost to him to be fast??. It could be too late when Nicky start to be consistently fast.. Confused ...I'd like him to be in the fight.

The other ones will fight for winning races...but I don't think they'll have any chance to be champion. Melandri should resolve their tyres problems and Capirossi...well, he's great, but as Ducati, he's too irregular and Nicky showed us last year how important that was...and we should keep an eye on Colin if the Yamaha is so good as it seems...without forgetting Stoner!

In my opinion (at this moment) Rossi is one step ahead Dani; both two are two steps ahead Nicky and one behind all the rest Smile

Hayden has recently recognise than during the last GP last year he had a strong pain in his shoulder and the only reason which kept him on track was the possibility of winning the title. Nicky has said that because of that injury he is having some problems and is gonna be difficult to him to reach his best form because, as he had to start testing, he couldn't recover totally from his injury, which needed at least two more weeks to be ok. Now, it's maybe going worse... Confused Question

As a Rossi fan I say "may God have Merci on the other riders, for I'm sure the Doctor is not going to have any", but to be objective I have to say the contenders are obvious, yeah Hayden is one of them, but the shoulder isn't going to let him alone for 2 to 3 weeks, so he has to limit the damage cause despite bad shoulder got 4th place, yeah not bad, but time wise he was 1 full second off Dani's time. As for Dani, well this should be his best year so far, I mean. the bike is easier to handle for him than the old 990, Honda's breaking is still the best and with his weight he should excel.

There are others, and they have been noted, but in the end this is going to be a battle with no more than 4 contenders and the first 4 races would help us finding who they will be, I hope to be wrong and have more riders actually fighting for the title, we'll see.

One thing's clear though, I can't wait for the first race, this is going to be a great season!, just one week more,

RossiFumi GANBATTE!

And now I introduce to you possibly the worst kept secret in MotoGP:

gpupdate.net wrote:
FIAT becomes Yamaha title sponsor

At an official presentation in Milan, Italy, the Yamaha Factory team today announced that it came to a two-year agreement with Fiat Automobiles as the team's official title sponsor. The team will be known from now on as the 'Fiat Yamaha Team'.

"We're very excited about our new two-year partnership with Fiat," said Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing. "Fiat, like Yamaha, is a truly global brand and we feel that there is a great match between our two companies. It's good for our sport to welcome a new sponsor of Fiat's calibre and we feel sure that they will enjoy their involvement with our team. We look forward to working with them over the coming two seasons and hopefully sharing many victories together."

Fiat Yamaha Team Director Davide Brivio added "It's nice to be able to finally unveil our new livery and our new sponsorship with Fiat. It's a new start for us - a new bike, a new sponsor and a new challenge as we try to win back the title! It's been a long pre-season for us but we're finally ready for the first race this week; let's hope we can mark our first outing in Fiat Yamaha Team colours in victorious style!"

The Fiat Yamaha Team will contest the opening round of the 18-race 2007 MotoGP championship this Saturday, 10th March in Qatar.

Finally it's official! The rumours have been there for I don't know how long. I think it's an interesting combination tho. A car manufacturer sponsoring a MotoGP team!

True. But who those far is not yet certain, so I can't wait for the weekend!
Also, I think Hayden may have some problems with his shoulder at first, allthough he won't mention it. He had a problem with his shoulder the last race of last year too, but when he has to perform he'll be there as he showed then. I have no doubt about that.

A few changes about the new season

Repsol Honda Team ==> Nicky Hayden - Dani Pedrosa
Honda Gressini ==> Marco Melandri - Toni Elias
Honda LCR ==> Carlos Checa
Konica Minolta Honda ==> Shinya Nakano

Fiat Yamaha Team ==> Valentino Rossi - Colin Edwards
Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3 ==> Makoto Tamada - Sylvain Guintoli

Ducati Pramac d'Antin ==> Alex Barros - Alex Hofmann
Ducati Marlboro Team ==> Casey Stoner - Loris Capirossi

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP ==> Chris Vermeulen - John Hopkins

Kawasaki Racing Team ==> Randy De Puniet - Olivier Jacque

Ilmor GP ==> Andrew Pitt - Jeremy McWilliams

Thouth Nicky has some problem, he is quite stable. He can try to be NO.6 or 8 in the first 3 or 4 races. Then he can get better. I believe in him and Dani. Wink

Hayden will have to challenge for podiums, or atleast top 5, the first few races to be a serious title contender.
Consistency is the key, but that does mean consitently fast!

But I have faith Hayden will step it up when he has too. Last year he came third in the final race while he had troubles with his shoulder!
Also he was second in Qatar last year, had a great battle with Rossi for victory the entire race!

Tomorrow the free practices will start! Finally! Very Happy

Actually no one can be always fast. Rossi can also be in trouble with the mechanical problem. We dont need to worry about Nicky too much. He'll become better and better. Go boys!!!
